Prof. Gavaises Manolis

Biography

Prof Gavaises obtained his PhD from Imperial College London in 1997, receiving the Richard Way Memorial Prize for the most outstanding doctoral thesis on internal combustion engines in the UK. His academic career began at City University London in 2001, with early research on electrification and NZE technologies supported by Toyota Motor Europe. He was appointed to the Delphi Technologies (UK) Research Chair in 2009 and holds honorary professorships at Sorbonne University and the University of Magdeburg, while also served as a visiting professor at EPFL (Switzerland) and the Von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics (Belgium).His research focuses on developing CFD tools for various multiphase flows, contributing to the design and commercialization by industry leaders of durable high pressure fuel injectors, novel additised fluids with tailored thermal and rheologicalproperties and electrification technologies where multiphase flows play a key role. The environmental impact of this research isreported in UK’s 2021 Research Evaluation framework impact case study, demonstrating annual (and ongoing) CO2 savings relative to 2009 baseline equivalent to those produced from a UK cityof ~200,000 inhabitants. More recently, his research has expanded into multi-material and multi-scale simulation methods, integrating data-driven approaches for emerging applications of fluid mechanics in lifesciences.

Prof. Yilu Liu

Biography

Yilu Liu received her M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the Ohio State University, Columbus, in 1986 and 1989, and B.S. degrees from Xian Jiaotong University, China. Dr. Liu is currently the UT-ORNL Governor’s Chair at the University of Tennessee and Oak Ridge National Laboratory. She is also the deputy director of the DOE/NSF engineering research center CURENT (curent.utk.edu). She led the effort to create the North American power grid Frequency Monitoring Network FNET/GridEye (fnetpublic.utk.edu, powerit.utk.edu). Dr. Liu’s research focus is in large grid dynamic modeling, simulations, and monitoring. Dr. Liu is a member of National Academy of Engineering, a member of the National Academy of inventors, a fellow of IEEE.

Prof. Kay J. Pfaffenberger

Prof. Dr. Kay Pfaffenberger (born 1965) holds a Master in Economic Sciences from Leibniz University Hannover and a PhD in Business and Administration from the University of Leipzig. He started his career as a consultant at the S-‐Kommunal Beratung in Hannover. As head of department he developed and managed electronic banking services at the Cooperative Bank BremenNord. Furthermore he has been consultant for company communication at CardProcess GmbH, Frankfurt. 2009 he founded the Institute for Communication, Finance and Good Governance. In 2012 Kay Pfaffenberger has been appointed as Professor for Business Administration at Flensburg University of Applied Sciences. Also he is the managing director of the Center for Business and Technology in Africa (CBTA). The main focus of his work is lecturing and applied research on business administration and political economics with special focus on business in Africa and inter-‐cultural-‐communication, banking and finance, good governance and renewable energy. In these fields he has supported cooperative banks especially in transaction banking with strong relations to DZ Bank. He has a wide experience with projects in the financial sector and recently with solar industry respective renewable energy companies in West‐Africa. The sustainable development and green energy are also in his focus. The CBTA had held an online conference in 2021 about Green Hydrogen cooperation possibilities between Africa and Europe. His actual field of research are the EU Green Energy Transition and the effects for local content as well as the need for skilled personnel for operations and maintenance. In 2024 he had been selected by Africa. Table Professional Briefing, the largest German-language Africa editorial team, as one of the key minds in the “Science” category. He is one of the 100-Top-of-the-Table minds in Germany for Africa.

Prof. Xia Cao is a top scientist in the field of new energy and self-powered systems, making groundbreaking and innovative contributions tonewpower generation and energy recycling that are widely recognized by international and domestic colleagues. Dr. Jan D. Haizmann is the Secretary General and CEO of the Zero Emissions Traders Alliance (ZETA) and the CEO of Correggio Consulting, a boutique energy trading consultancy. A fully qualified lawyer, he studied law in Germany, the UK, and Belgium, earning his PhD in Brussels and gaining admission to the German Bar in Munich in 1994. With extensive experience in European competition law, energy trading, and regulatory affairs, Dr. Haizmann has worked with leading commodity firms, served as an expert in arbitration proceedings, and advised governments on market development, including EU-backed projects in Turkey, Ukraine, and Azerbaijan. From 2005 to 2023, he held key executive roles within Traders for Europe (EFET), serving on its Board of Directors and leading the Legal Committee for 18 years. Dr. Kenza Maher

Dr. Kenza Maher serves as a Scientist at the Qatar Environment and Energy Research Institute (QEERI) since January 2015. With over 12 years of dedicated experience in battery energy storage R&D, her expertise lies in crafting secure and dependable materials for both Li-ion and Na-ion batteries. She's also a driving force behind pioneering diagnostic approaches and protocols crucial for verifying the reliability and performance of battery systems, cells, and materials. Previously, Dr. Maher held pivotal roles such as Research Fellow and Project Leader at the Joint Future Mobility Research Lab in collaboration with the BMW Group and Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. During this tenure, her primary focus was on ensuring the safety and diagnosing BMW electric car batteries, addressing the critical issue of thermal runaway hazards in vehicles. Dr. Maher earned her PhD from Cadi Ayyad University in Morocco in January 2011, where her research significantly contributed to the advancement of novel phosphate and oxide materials tailored for high-energy lithium-ion batteries. Complementing her academic journey, she conducted research as a Guest Researcher at the Angström Laboratory, Department of Material Chemistry, Uppsala University in Sweden. Post-PhD, she expanded her insights at the Energy Research Institute of Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, contributing to the innovation of a groundbreaking method for assessing battery state of charge (SOC) and state of health (SOH) through thermodynamic properties. Prof. Z Fuat Toprak

Dr. Toprak is a civil engineer and academician in water sciences (M.Sc., PhD). He interests in water resources, hydraulics, fluid mechanics, global climate change, statistics, and fuzzy logic. He was born in October 8, 1967 in Diyarbakir – Turkey. He graduated from Hizirilyas First School, Ali Emiri Secondary School, and Gaziantep High School in 1979, 1982, and 1985 respectively. He graduated from Dicle University, Engineering Faculty Civil Engineering Department in 1989. Just after graduating, he worked in the private sector for a short period. He completed his MSc studies in 1994 at Firat University and his PhD from Istanbul Technical University (ITU) in 2004. He gets titles Assoc. Prof. and Prof. in 2011 and 2017, respectively. Dr. Toprak has more than 180 of published studies, which 12 of them are books or books’ chapters in water resources, hydraulics, fluid mechanics, global climate change, statistics, and fuzzy logic sciences. His articles ranked with 1st, 4th, 6th, and 8th ranks in the top 25 article lists. He introduced to two new methods (SMRGT and ZFT) and brought four concepts (“climatic identity”, “time coefficient”, “stream coefficient”, and “ideal velocity”) into literature. The first methodology is developed to automatically construct membership functions and generate fuzzy rules, whereas the second one proposed for determining the water losses in drinking water – networks. The first concept related to the global climate change. The next two of them are used for modeling monthly mean flow in poorly gauged basins. The last one is a new concept for cross – sectional velocity distribution of any pipe or open channel flow. He was supported with Overseas Fellowship by British Hydrological Society (BHS) and IRD to attend conferences namely British Hydrological Society and Balkan Water Observation and Information System (BALWOIS) respectively, in 2004. He has been invited to about 200 scientific meeting held in more than 25 countries (i.e. USA, Russia, Australia, UK, China, India, Spain, Algeria, Italy, Sweden, Finland, Republic of South Africa, and Egypt etc.). He invited to an International Conference held in USA in 2013 and to Climate and Environmental Physics Laboratory of Natural Science Institute, Civil Engineering Department, and Turkish Language and Literary Department of Ural Federal University for serial seminars and short courses in 2014. Similarly, he has been invited to Republic of South Africa in 2018 for consultancy on both water resources and drought, for presenting serial seminars, and giving short courses at University of Free State.

Fu-Shen ZHANG, PhD, professor, is the head of Solid Waste Treatment and Recycling Group at Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences. He is also the distinguished professor of University of Chinese Academy of Sciences. He obtained his PhD in the field of environmental engineering from Tohoku University (Japan), and carried out post-doctoral research at the University of Michigan (USA). He was also JSPS research fellow at Nagoya University in Japan. Professor Zhang’s research addresses effective recycling of solid wastes, including functional materials development from solid waste, valuable matters recovery from solid waste and pollution control of solid waste, typically highlights e-waste, polymer waste and industrial waste. Altankhundaga Shirbazar is a doctoral student at the Clean Energy System Laboratory, Department of Energy and Mechanical Engineering, Gyeongsang National University, South Korea. He received his master’s degree in Heat supply of cities and industries from the Ural Federal University of Russia in 2019 and his bachelor’s degree from the Mongolian University of Science and Technology in 2016. From 2019 to 2022, he served as a lecturer at the Power Engineering School of the Mongolian University of Science and Technology. His current research focuses on detailed observation of the geyser boiling phenomenon, flow characteristics and “Confinement effect” in small-diameter two-phase closed thermosyphon (TPCT).

Dr. Xinran Zhang received the B.S. degree and Ph.D. in electrical engineering and automation from Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, in 2011 and 2016, respectively, with honors. From 2016 to 2020, he was a Postdoctoral Fellow with the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, The University of Hong Kong. Since 2021, he has been with the School of Automation Science and Electrical Engineering, Beihang University, Beijing, China, where he is currently an associate professor. He was selected for a national overseas high-level talent plan youth project and has hosted several research projects, including two projects for NSFC. He is an editor of iEnergy and a review editor of Frontiers in Energy Research. His research interests include power system stability and control, load modeling, high-altitude wind power generation, and the application of artificial intelligence in power systems.
